About 3,900 people lost their jobs because of artificial intelligence in May, a new report found. It's the first time AI is listed as a cause in Challenger, Gray, and Christmas's monthly report. It's the latest piece of evidence that AI will disrupt a significant number of jobs. Some 3,900 of the over 80,000 job cuts that took place in May were attributed to AI, the report found. Outside of the pandemic, the start of 2023 has produced the worst layoff numbers since the 820,000 layoffs that took place to start 2009, per the Challenger report.

A supply-chain analyst said Apple's anticipated mixed-reality headset has 4K displays for each eye. Global human resources company Deel says more US-based companies are hiring workers from Latin America. Deel's CEO says US companies can hire Latin America-based staff at a lower cost than domestic employees. It's called "nearshoring," and in this case it's companies zeroing in on workers from Latin America who can work in a time zone close to the US — and for less money than US-based staff. Deel said in the first quarter of this year, it's seen a 50% increase in US companies hiring workers from Latin America when compared to the same quarter last year. Deel's 2022 State of Global Hiring Report shows that Latin American countries were at the top of the list from where global companies were hiring.
Some Gmail users are unhappy that ads are showing up in the middle of their email inbox. The new ad placements were tested last year on mobile, and rolled out to desktop in the last month. Some people are seeing ads show up between emails in their Gmail inbox — and they are not happy about it. A Twitter user named Rosemary H tweeted that they were "INCENSED" about the ads showing up in their inbox. Another Twitter user shared a photo of ads at the top and in the middle of his Promotions inbox, saying Google is "going ham" with the ads.
A Google exec took a thinly veiled jab at Apple at the company's Google IO conference. The exec said the company hopes every mobile operating system adopts a messaging standard called RCS. Google has campaigned for Apple to adopt RCS to make texting between iOS and Android a better experience. The moment was Google's latest attempt to pressure Apple to adopt something called the the RCS messaging standard, or Rich Communications Services. Samat said that over 800 million people currently use the RCS standard, with expectations that number will balloon to 1 billion by the end of the year.

A new chatbot called Pi, launched by Inflection AI, offers personal advice and support. There's a new AI chatbot on the scene — and this one wants to get personal. At one point, I asked Pi to share museum recommendations for a friend visiting New York City. Insider asked Pi how to restart the conversation, and Pi said to "start talking about whatever is on your mind." Inflection AI also said it's "creating a new form of 'boundary training' that will redefine how AIs learn and are trained."
